The Annie Project
The Annie Project provides the free gift of cherished animal portraits for owners with near end of life pets.
Annie’s story:
As I sat in a meeting with my staff at Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Sanctuary, I was being stared down by a scrappy little rat terrier sitting on the lap of our Veterinarian. Those bright eyes were boring holes right through me and a minute later there she was - up on my lap. Annie was a semi-feral rez dog from the Navajo Nation and bore the scars of a bad coyote attack and was scared of people. As I drove back to Santa Fe I could not get this little girl out of my head. The next morning I opened up my first email (which happened to be from the Ranch) …guess whose photo was staring me right in the face? Yep, that scrappy terrier.
That was it. Dog # 6. She was my unexpected child but meant to be our dog and we both knew it. So the saying goes. “You don’t pick out a dog, they pick you”
Annie became my little angel, she was an avid hunter and just wanted to be a “good girl” however she quickly let all our other dogs know she was in charge and proceeded to put them in place. Always tough as nails and not one to be messed with, she was a bit of a bad ass.
Eventually we moved from Santa Fe to NYC and to our surprise we discovered Annie was a city girl at heart! She came out of her shell and learned to love people plus she found the streets were lined with food - she was in absolute heaven. She proudly strutted her stuff up and down Madison Avenue with us for 5 years until she sadly passed at 15.
I miss all our dogs but Annie has a special place in my heart… we both found our true selves, fell in love with the city and became New Yorkers together. And so, this project is dedicated to my special girl, Annie
